Tucked away just north of Boston lies a town that's often overlooked but holds within its bounds a treasure trove of hidden gems waiting to be discovered. Stoneham, MA, might not be the most talked-about town in the state, but having lived there for 10 years, it holds a special place in my heart.
A Glimpse In to History: Nestled in Middlesex County, Stoneham boasts a rich history dating back to the 1700s. Visitors can step back in time by visiting the Old Burying Ground, where gravestones tell tales of the town's founding families. The Stoneham Historical Society will also give you a glimpse into the town's rich past.
Nature's Haven: For nature enthusiasts and hikers, the Middlesex Fells Reservation is an oasis waiting to be explored. Sprawling over 2,500 acres, this natural haven offers picturesque trails, serene lakes, and breathtaking views. Whether it's a leisurely stroll or a challenging hike up Bear Hill, the Fells provides an escape into nature's beauty just moments away from the town center.
Culinary Delights and Local Eateries: Stoneham surprises visitors with its culinary diversity. From cozy cafes like Kushala Sip and Kennedy's Cafe serving aromatic coffee blends to family-owned diners like Pignone's Cafe dishing out delicious homemade recipes, the town's food scene is a delightful adventure for the taste buds. Some of my other favorite restaurants include Angelo's or Gaetano's for Italian, Fusion Taste for sushi and Rang for Indian specialities.
Community Spirit and Events: One thing that has really grown over the years is Stoneham's strong sense of community. Throughout the year, the town hosts various events that bring residents and visitors together. From weekly farmers' markets showcasing local produce to summer concerts in the park, there's always something happening that fosters a sense of belonging and camaraderie. The Stoneham Chamber website is a great resource for all of the wonderful local events.
Embracing Art and Culture: The Stoneham Theatre, now known as the Greater Boston Stage Company, showcases a range of theatrical performances, captivating audiences with its diverse repertoire.
Extracurricular Activities: Stoneham boasts a world-class rock climbing gym, Central Rock Gym, offering diverse climbing challenges for all skill levels. With towering walls and a supportive community, it's the perfect spot for both beginners and seasoned climbers seeking an adrenaline-fueled adventure. The Stone Zoo, formerly known as the Middlesex Fells Reservation Zoo, is another fantastic place to explore with or without kids!
Stoneham, MA, with its charming streets and welcoming community has many hidden gems waiting to be discovered. It's a town where history meets nature, where local flavors tantalize the palate, and where the spirit of community thrives.
